Karna – The Tragic Hero of Mahabharata or a Great Demon? Judge Yourself

The post which I am going to write on the great character of Karna, is a continuous effort of last 3 months or more than that, during this phase I was listening to Vagwat Mahapuran from different sages and Bhagwat preachers, but it was a single day when I discovered the actual fact of Karna from Devi ChitralekhaJi. So finally I am very happy to write the post and present the same in front of you all.

Before I tell you regarding the previous birth of Karna, let me tell you about the Nishkam Karmayog which was explained by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra and you all will witness how this yog became the integral part of Karna’s life. So kindly follow the images attached bellow:

Hope things are a bit clear to you now, if not then I’m explaining it further in a simple way-
What is Nishkam Karma Yog?
When one performs his duty without having any expectation in mind to achieve any goal or any result then it’s called Nishkam Karma or Nishkam Karma yog. And Yog is worship towards Krishna. If I am running this website with the expectation to earn fame and fortune then it will become Sakam Karma (Karma having desire or expectation from), so as a result of this desire this act of mine will lose it’s purity and become contaminated. But if I will keep on running the website without having any expectation of how many people will appreciate my work or how many Fb likes I will earn then I will remain free from earning the Pap (Sin) or Punya (Merit), but be it’s sin or merit, if the volume will be high enough for which this present birth is not sufficient to suffer or enjoy then because of this bondage I need to rebirth on this earth, so I will be losing the chance to meet salvation or mokshya. But the actual moto should be to utilize the present time in practicing the Krishna consciousness and return to the Lotus feet of Radha Madhav. It’s so simple. In future I will focus more on Bhagwat Gita Slokas through different posts. Now coming back to Karna’s topic.

The Past of Karna:
In his previous birth Karna was a demon naming as Dambhodbhav, according to few sages Dambhodbhav had one more name as Sahasrakabachi. By spliting this name we will get 2 different words as Sahasra (1000) & Kabachi (Protection), so one who is protected by 1000 Kabach Kundals, is known as Sahasrakabachi. In order to please Sun the demon did penace for many years, when finally Sun was pleased then he appeared before the Sahasrakabachi and asked him to partake a boon. Then the demon wished to become immortal, but Sun said as per the law of nature set by Lord Krishna is one who will take birth in this world must die after completing his allotted time span. So he should ask for alternate boon. Then after thinking for sometime what the demon asked was totally unique and extraordinary too in nature. He asked “Oh Lord Sun kindly give me a 1000 Kavach–Kundal that should not break for at least 1000 years and one who breaks it should die immediately.” The Sun granted this and disappeared. As usual after getting such a divine power the demon started misusing it and caused havoc to the world, and as the boon was such that the person who will break the Kabach will die immediately, so no one even tried to protest. So when everything started going beyond controll or tolerance then all the demigods along with sages approached the Lord Narayana in order to get rid of this problem.

To save this world then Lord Narayana formed himself as 2 sages (Nara & Narayana) and they started fighting one by one. First Nara started fighting with SahasraKabchi and Narayana started meditating for 1000 years and gained a lot of power which is known as Mrit Sanjeevani Vidya. When after fighting for long 1000 years Nara was able to break the 1st kabach then immediately he died, then Narayana with his Mrit Sanjeevani power brought back Nara’s life and started fighting with the demon for next 1000 years, in between Nara also meditated and gained the same Mrit Sanjeevani vidya, when Narayana died after breaking the 2nd Kabach then Nara brought back his life. In this way the process went on and on for long 1000000 years and Nar-Narayana’s joint effort was able to break 999 Kabachs. When the demon realized that the divine and unbeatable power of both, then he escaped the battlefield and took shelter in the aura of Sun or Surya Mandal. Later in next birth the same demon re-birthed as Karna, he became the son of Mata Kunti and Sun. As this matter always been a very controversial topic in our society so I would take this opportunity to clear the matter, first of all Mata Kunti is as pure as Mata Ganga. By serving a lot Mata Kunti got a boon from the Sage Durvasa, the boon was nothing but a Mantra through which she can ask any God to meet with her anytime she want and get a child of him without loosing the virginity. To verify or to test this boon once Mata Kunti wished to meet the Suryadev and to her surprise Suryadev really appeared in front of her and gave a baby boy who was none other than the demon itself who completed his life cycle hiding behind the aura of Sun. Now please pay attention to this incident as I am going to relate it to Nishkam Karmayog of Gita. The penace of the demon was a Sakam Karma, but as the previous life was not sufficient for him to enjoy the boon so he did not get the salvation and after a long time he had to take rebirth to enjoy the remaining fruit of his past Karma. Hope I have been able to clear this point. 🙂

In my last FB post I told all of you that I will reveal the secret relation of 3 characters, Krishna, Arjuna & Karna, so by now you know Karna was the reincarnation of the demon and he birthed with his remaining 1 Kabach. The Nar & Narayana also reappeared as Arjuna and Krishna in order to break the remaining 1 Kabach, so this was the secret relation of them which I meant in my post. 🙂 However as the Kurukshetra war had to be lasted for 18 days so Krishna begged the Kabach back by Devraj Indra and you guys know the remaining story well, Arjuna defeated Karna with help of Narayana/Krishna.

But if I will focus only the negative part of Karna then it will be injustice to him, it is the known fact that he was a great beneficent (Daan Veer), when he was asked to give his Kabach Kundal as alms, he did not hesitate to give it though he knew well that Devraj Indra will be coming to him in disguise of a brahmin to get the Kabach Kundal, he also knew that he is the elder brother of Pandavas and this secret was revealed to him by Krishna only before the war began, however as he made a promise in his life to Duryodhana that he will always stand by him, so he kept his promise even after knowing well that Defeat will be the ultimate outcome to Kauravas. We know that he made a derogatory statement upon Doupadi, but later Karna admitted this great sin of him to Krishna and told that Droupadi is nothing but a real Sati (loyal wife {the 5 Pandavas was none other than the 5 different forms of a same Deity known as Pachomukhi Indra and Droupadi was the Sarga Laxmi, the wife of Panchamukhi Indra}) and he went on making negative statements on the day of Duyt Krira. So there is no doubt that he was a brave man. So this is what the actual story is behind the tragic hero of Karna.

Karna was the best character in Mahabharat coz when Indra, the king of the Devas and the father of Arjuna, realized that Karna would be invincible in battle and unable to be killed as long as he had his kavach and kundal. He approaches Karna as a poor Brahmin during Karna’s sun-worship. Surya warned Karna of Indra’s intentions, but Karna thanked Surya and explained that he was bound by his word and could not send anyone from his door empty-handed. When Indra approaches, Karna reveals that he knew the Brahmin’s true identity but assured that he would never turn anyone away. Cutting the armor and earrings off his body, Karna handed them to Indra. For Karna’s generosity Indra decided to reward him and Karna asked for Indra’s powerful weapon, the Vasavi shakti. Indra granted the boon, with the stipulation that Karna could only use the weapon once. He was married to Vrushali. He had nine sons; Vrishasena, Vrishaketu, Chitrasena, Satyasena, Sushena, Shatrunjaya, Dvipata, Banasena and Prasena all of these took part in the Kurukshetra war.

Nara narrowed his eyes angrily. He pulled out some water from his kamandalam and threw it on Surya and cursed him. ‘You have gone against my Narayana! He asked you for something and you refused! For this I curse you that you would be born as a human and suffer for this!’ Surya bowed his head. He knew that he should not have sheltered a monster but he was willing to pay the price for his devotee. Here the curse is only for lord surya not for SAHASRAKAVACH/DAMBHODBHAVA/TANASURA then how could you say that karna is SAHASRAKAVACH/DAMBHODBHAVA/TANASURA. Do you know the difference between karma and avatar. Lord narayana once had to kill RISHI BRIGHU’S WIFE who was not allowing him to ill few demons for they had obtained her hostage and so Vishnu had to kill her. Enraged brighu cursed lord that when he takes a human form he would be separated from the god’s life just like him. Later the avatar was LORD RAM but his karma was killing brighu’s wife. The same is the case of karna he is the avatar of lord surya with the karma of SAHASRAKAVACH/DAMBHODBHAVA/TANASURA.
Know that Duryodhana was Kali, and Sakuni was Dwapara. O thou of good features, know that Dussasana and others were all Rakshasas. Bhimasena of great might, that chastiser of foes, is from the Maruts. Know that this Dhananjaya, the son of Pritha, is the ancient Rishi Nara. Hrishikesa is Narayana, and the twins are the Aswins. The foremost of heat-giving ones, viz., Surya, having divided his body in twain, continued with one portion to give heat to the worlds and with another to live (on Earth.) as Karna. He that took his birth as the son of Arjuna, that gladdener of all, that heir to the possessions of the Pandavas, who was slain by six great car-warriors (fighting together), was Soma. He was born of Subhadra. Through Yoga-puissance he had dividedhimself in twain. Dhrishtadyumna who sprung with Draupadi from the sacrificial fire, was an auspicious portion of the deity of fire. Sikhandin was a Rakshasa. Know that Drona was a portion of Vrihaspati, and that Drona’s son is born of a portion of Rudra. Know that Ganga’s son Bhishma was one of the Vasus that became born as a human being. Thus, O thou of great wisdom, the deities had taken birth as human beings, and after having accomplished.
